Residential Heating and Cooling Rebate Eligibility Requirements

Furnace

Natural Gas Furnace 95%+ AFUE

  • Must be a customer of a participating electric utility and a participating natural gas utility. Verify your utility
  • Customer must use natural gas for home heating.
  • Furnace must have an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) of 95 percent or greater.
  • Furnace must meet ENERGY STAR® requirements for U.S. North gas furnaces.
  • Only natural gas furnaces are eligible.
  • Furnace must be a heating source for the home's living space.
  • Chimney liners must be installed where a high-efficiency gas furnace replaces an atmospherically-drafted furnace and only a water heater remains vented through the chimney. The interior opening left by the removed furnace must be closed with a metal cap and sealed with caulk or mortar.

Boiler

Modulating Natural Gas Boiler 90%+ AFUE

  • Must be a customer of a participating natural gas utility. Verify your utility
  • Boiler must have an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) of 90 percent or greater.
  • An outdoor-air reset control (integrated) must be installed.
  • Boiler must be sealed combustion unit.
  • Only natural gas boilers are eligible.
  • Boiler must be a heating source for the home's living space.
  • Chimney liners must be installed where a high-efficiency gas boiler replaces an atmospherically-drafted boiler and only a water heater remains vented through the chimney. The interior opening left by the removed boiler must be closed with a metal cap and sealed with caulk or mortar.

Combination Boiler

Modulating Combination Natural Gas Boiler with Integrated Domestic Hot Water and Outdoor Reset Control, 90%+ AFUE

    • Must be a customer of a participating natural gas utility. Verify your utility
    • Boiler must have an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) of 90 percent or greater.
    • An outdoor-air reset control (integrated) must be installed.
    • Boiler must be sealed combustion unit.
    • Boilers must also be a heating source for the home’s living space and domestic water heating source for the home.
    • Only natural gas boilers are eligible.
    • Chimney liners must be installed where a high-efficiency gas boiler replaces an atmospherically-drafted boiler and only a water heater remains vented through the chimney. The interior opening left by the removed boiler must be closed with a metal cap and sealed with caulk or mortar.

    • Boiler must meet ENERGY STAR® requirements.

Smart Thermostat

  • Limit of one rebate per heating system, and two per household.
  • Must be a customer of a participating electric utility. Verify your utility
  • Home heating source must be provided by a participating utility. Verify your utility Homes heated by LP (liquid propane), oil, electric resistance, or wood are not eligible for the smart thermostat rebate.
  • Does not qualify if thermostat services a water heater, ground source heat pump (geothermal), or electric resistance heater.
  • Thermostat must be certified as an ENERGY STAR® Connected Thermostat, or meet the following requirements:
    • Must be Wi-Fi capable.
    • Must be capable of internet connection.
    • Must feature occupancy sensing, via geolocation and/or motion sensing.
    • The above features must be built-in and not require add-on devices or services.
    • The application and connectivity service must be free after thermostat purchase.
    • Thermostat default behavior must be to set back temperature when house is unoccupied
  • Smart thermostat must be installed to use with the home's primary heating source for the home's living space.
  • Only homes heated by a natural gas furnace, natural gas boiler or an air source heat pump are eligible for the smart thermostat rebate.
  • Smart thermostat must replace an existing thermostat that does not qualify for program rebates.
  • The customer must establish the Wi-Fi connection for program-qualified smart thermostats.

Electronically Commutated Motor (ECM)

ECM Replacement

  • Must be a customer of a participating electric utility. Verify your utility
  • Must replace a permanent split capacitor (PSC) blower motor in an existing furnace or air handler.
  • Existing furnace must have an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) of 90 percent or greater.
  • Existing furnace must be a sealed combustion unit.
  • Furnace must be the primary heating source for the home's living space.

Heat Pump

Air Source Heat Pump (existing primary heating fuel: propane, oil, etc.)

Must be a customer of a participating electric utility. Verify your utility

Air source heat pump with a minimum of:

  • Ducted
    • 15.2 SEER2
    • 10.0 EER2
    • 8.1 HSPF2
  • Ductless
    • 16.0 SEER2
    • 9.0 EER2
    • 9.5 HSPF2
  • SEER2, EER2, and HSPF2 based on AHRI database, found at ahridirectory.org, for furnace/air handler (if applicable), coil, and condenser.
  • System must be listed as "Heat Pumps" and "Variable-Speed Mini-Split and Multi-Split Heat Pumps" within AHRI, "Water-Source Heat Pumps" are not eligible.
  • Coil and condenser must be purchased and installed at the same time.
  • You cannot receive the rebate for both furnace or boiler and the Air Source Heat Pump.
  • Must be primary heating source for the home's living space.

Air Source Heat Pump (existing primary heating fuel: natural gas or electricity)

  • Ducted

    Indirect Water Heater

    Indirect Water Heater for Home Heating Boiler

    • Must be a customer of a participating natural gas utility. Verify your utility
    • Must be installed at the same time as a qualified boiler that is also receiving a Focus on Energy rebate.
    • Be sure to check our pre-qualified boiler equipment lists at focusonenergy.com/heatingandcooling.
    • Indirect water heater rebate is not available with boilers that were previously installed.

    Single Package Vertical Unit

    • Must be a customer of a participating electric utility and a participating natural gas utility. Verify your utility
    • Single package vertical unit must meet the minimum efficiency requirements listed.
      • > 90%+ Thermal Efficiency, NG, > 11.0 EER Cooling
      • > 90%+ Thermal Efficiency, NG
    • Efficiency ratings will be verified using the AHRI database.
    • Required features must be documented on a specification sheet.

    Package Terminal Heat Pump (PTHP)

    • Must be a customer of a participating electric utility. Verify your utility
    • Unit must be AHRI listed as a Commercial PTHP.
    • Must replace a Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner (PTAC). Replacement of existing PTHP does NOT qualify.
    • Window and through-the-wall air conditioners/heat pumps do not qualify.
    • The equipment size category (BTUh) is the cooling capacity value of the unit.
    • Must meet both heating and cooling specifications for the equipment size category.
      • < 8,000 BTUh, > 10.7 EER and > 3.1 COP
      • 8,000 - 9,999 BTUh, > 10.4 EER and > 3.0 COP
      • 10,000 - 12,999 BTUh, > 9.9 EER and > 2.9 COP
      • > 13,000 BTUh, > 9.3 EER and > 2.9 COP
    • All efficiency ratings will be verified using the AHRI database.
