Madison – A new luxury apartment development on Madison’s east side can list energy efficiency among the amenities for its residential and commercial tenants thanks to its work with Focus on Energy.
Prime Urban Properties developed and opened the Asana Apartments building in east Madison last year with rental housing and ground-floor commercial space. In the development process, the company engaged with Focus on Energy and worked with its Renewable Rewards and Multifamily New Construction programs.
In the end, the four-story building incorporated multiple energy-efficiency measures, including ENERGY STAR LED downlights, high-efficiency heat pumps, a high-efficiency central hot water heater, and aerators throughout the building to reduce the flow of water without losing water pressure Prime Urban Properties also decided to install a solar array to offset some of the building’s electricity usage.
Nearly $7,500 in Focus on Energy incentives helped cover the up-front costs of those energy-efficiency measures. The incentives are made possible through Focus on Energy’s partnership with Madison Gas & Electric, the utility provider for the building and one of 107 Wisconsin utilities that fund the program.
Each year, the solar panels are expected to offset electricity usage equal to 2,500 gallons of gasoline consumed. And combined electricity and natural gas savings from the other energy-efficiency measures, over their lifecycle, are the equivalent of burning 624,000 pounds of coal.
A recent evaluation report found every $1 invested in Focus on Energy programs creates $5.93 in benefits for Wisconsin, including economic benefits, reduced energy costs, and reduced pollution.
